Jacobs University in Bremen. Privately funded and international...it's unique in Germany. It has twelve hundred students from around the world. But getting a place is tough. Jacobs University is an elite campus for tomorrow's leaders.

19 year old Devashish is from India. He wants to go into logistics, to become an expert in planning and organising. But at the moment he has little time for studying. "Ninety percent of my time at Jacobs is dedicated to sport. Ten Percent goes into thinking ABOUT sports", he says.

Yetunde is a 22 year old Nigerian studying biochemistry. She wants to become a doctor. She's also a passionate dancer, and keen to share her knowledge. Yetunde is to sit her Bacherlor's exam soon. Her ambitions were clear early on in life: "I was probably going on six, when my brother was born. I was choosing between becoming an astronaut or becoming a medical doctor. Because mummy said, she wouldn't want any of her children going to the moon", Yetunde says.

Jan is German. The 21 year old is studying sociology. He's a a mover and shaker...and wants to make the world a better place. "You can start with small steps and develop from there", he says. And he's a mean cocktail mixer too.

Jan the sociologist isn't as sporty as Devashish. But he can still move things. "In the past two year's I've spent the summer doing projects in Africa, in Nigeria and Tanzania. We put up an extra building for a new school outside Dar es Salam. They needed another building to be big enough to get government funding."

There's plenty for him to do on the campus. He's checking out the fitness studio. Jan and his colleagues are unhappy with the weights room. The problem is, when you look around here, you see that there is very very little space up here. It's not a proper gym. So If nothing happens--we agreed for one year this is okay, but if nothing happens, we're going to be very angry." It's an issue that might end up being settled by the president.

From the gym to the stars. Aerospace company EADS has a centre in Bremen. Devashish and his fellow logistic students have been granted access. This is where parts of the international space station ISS are being built. Getting them into space and keeping them running is a huge task for the logistics people. Jacobs University emphasises the connection between economics and technology. Devashish and his fellow students also check out the astronauts' bunks.

Logistics Professor Jens Froese: "They have to familiarise themselves with technical systems. We confront them with that. We take them out into space to show them what the possibilities are. And these things are applicable for everyday uses." The trip has left the Jacobs students hungry, but has got them thinking. "Reach for the stars and you might actually land on the moon. That's what they said, right?", Devashish says.

In Her Own Words

I grew up between Nigeria and the UK… a strange combination but it worked for me! I’m the eldest of three – I’ve a brother and a sister.

Anyway, after all of that I signed up for Jacobs to study Biology and Biochem and cell biology. But what I really signed up for was campus life: I was into everything, from ballroom dancing to debating, student parliament (that year I was the only girl) to salsa. You’ll notice a bit of dancing coming up here, this is what I’m really into. In my first year I helped establish the breakdancing club.

Great fun, and all to play for, but some of it was serious stuff: one of the best events I organized and hosted was the women’s conference, bringing in big-shot women from Germany and beyond to talk about who they were and how they got there. A real eye-opener. I was also a teaching assistant for biology which was great experience – with thousands of nomenclatures this was no easy job.

I lived with a ton of international students in C3 for the three years I was at Jacobs, and there was real college spirit there, too.

Anyway so I’m hoping to go on to be a medical student, either to practice or to go into medical research. I would love to go back to England or N. America, Johns Hopkins would be a great place for me I think. But before that, I think I’ll take a year off. I’m looking for work and I just want to hang out for a year.

FIRST THOUGHTS ON THE SHOW

I loved doing this, and the Deutsche Welle guy was great, really friendly. But I have to admit that as a final year student, things got a bit intense for me at the end there. Particularly around graduation, when I was signing my friend’s books and feeling a little teary… I found it hard to be on camera when I was at my most vulnerable.

Also, I hope I don’t give the impression that everyone is into everything at Jacobs. There are some really focused students at Jacobs, focused on their studies and in their play. It’s just that some of us (like me, I guess) dabble in everything.
What I hope is that the DW show will let everyone see how we all are on campus, not just this one kid!

TOUGHTS ON JACOBS ...

What makes Jacobs a special place for academics is the focused attention one receives from the Professors. It makes a difference when a lecturer knows your name and gives encouragement when you are struggling or praise when you are doing well.
Also, the emphasis on the practical. Most courses incorporate practical skills that you will need. E.g. the number of presentations one gives tends to increase every year, one learns to research efficiently for seminar discussions and discussions that come up during or after presentation sessions.

In the life science courses, we are exposed to the "real world" because we are encouraged to read and discuss scientific publications and there is a third year seminar course on the process of such publications (peer reviews and such). This class also does a simulation of it as we write up a "paper"
on a topic we have researched (in theoretical terms of course) and have it peer reviewed several times before presenting it.

The help one receives in planning one's academic future is also priceless.
Each lecturer wants the best for his/her students and almost always helps with references, internship advice and even grad school pointers.

In terms of preparation for leadership roles and ambassadorial roles in future, the university gives you opportunities to hone such skills if you have them. They are probably more opportunities for such than there are students (joking, but there are a lot). Group projects, student jobs and many extra-curricular activities which one can join or create are the many ways in which we acquire many skills that prepares us for any work environment.

In His Own Words ...

My name is Jan Eichhorn and I am about to start my fifth semester at Jacobs University Bremen where I study Integrated Social Sciences.

Up to my 17th birthday I lived in a city called Magdeburg in the East of Germany. I went to a school with a specialized profile in Math, Sciences and Technology, but also placed emphasis on humanities and social sciences. A lot of my free time I spent doing school student interest representation work , playing tennis and the usual stuff you do as a teenager.

My last two years of high school I got the chance to spend at the United World College of the Atlantic, a school where students from more than 80 countries lived and learned together enabled through a generous scholarship program. The experience shaped me a lot and I took up activities such as Model United Nations, became a lifeguard myself and trained others as lifeguards and roomed with three people from very different cultural backgrounds.

It was the focus on internationality that drove me to Jacobs University, as well the fact that the course in Integrated Social Sciences catered strongly to my interests, approaching an understanding of societal debates. At Jacobs I enjoy the MUN society and student representation still, but also I enjoy the amount of fantastic people that you can meet at any time during the day and the night to spontaneously get up to sometimes strange - but always entertaining - things…

After my last three summers on different projects, working in Russia, Nigeria and Tanzania, now I am doing an internship in London as a research assistant to the Social Market Foundation – a political think tank – and enjoy it greatly.

First thoughts on the show ...

"It is a little odd to be followed by a camera when doing just your normal stuff from work to fun things. But at the same time it probably is the best way to give an inside into what life at this place really is about. I'm quite excited about seeing what came out of it, but really hope there aren't too many scenes which turned out too weird about us ;-)"

About Jacobs University ...

"Jacobs is quite rough at times. But making your way through the academics and combining it with all that it offered in addition to this really helps you to manage your time and life. It also makes you appreciate small things like a free weekend on a couch, but keeps you even restless then, because after the semester I greatly enjoy recovering well, but can't stay calm for too long - one just gets used to a busy way of living. I love being around people from many nations, because that is what makes you aware that your home perspective might be very distorted. Learning about different perceptions allows me to understand new problems and to reach out for new sorts of ideas. One of the best things is the close relationship to faculty and the chance to be involved with the research process at such an early stage."

In His Own Words ...

I’m Devashish, (thats one of my several names, courtesy Jacobs) and I’m from Pune, India. I studied at Loyola High School grades 1-10. After that I spent two years studying science at Fergusson College, also in Pune. I came to study International Logistics at Jacobs in September last year, my freshman year. Getting into the groove of Jacobs life took a short while, but it's been a smooth ride till here. Sports, clubs and social life have played an excellent role in balancing out the academic load. You get to enjoy the best of both worlds at Jacobs.

The international environment in the bubble is what I love best. The unity in diversity and the enthusiasm with which the students participate in campus life is what I find thrilling to be a part of (the spazz-factor as well, of course)! I have to admit that I'm missing my friends and life there a lot. But at the moment I'm clocking 45 working hour weeks as an intern at Mercedes Benz in Pune, which makes the C,E,S-class cars, the consumables and the Boss my current best friends!

After Jacobs I’m going for Harvard Business School, so yeah, I sure got my work cut out for me!

Micheal did a great job with his camera and his patience with a teenager and his nose ;) Im very eager to see the results. I have to mention Mr. Wiegand here who pulled off a couple of brilliant stunt acts to ensure that some shots were not missed! :) The plan is to grab some popcorn, sodas and watch the show with friends and family here. It was a great experience and plus it’ll show what life’s like in Germany to them… it’s pretty different here in Pune!
